SL Meets Khloé Kardashian
I’ve been really intentional during the last few years of my 30s. I just turned 40 and wanted to do the things I’ve always wanted to do but was fearful or in my own head about. I’ve done collabs in the past with my sisters and ex-husband – but I wanted to do something completely on my own and that I had full creative control over. That was a really scary thing for me – because if it doesn't do well, it’s then all on me – but I wanted to push myself and take those risks in my fourth decade of life.
This launch feels like divine timing. We’ve been working on this for over two years, but I feel like it’s all coming together at a time when I’m so ready to make it happen. It makes me feel like it was all really meant to be.
I’ve always been a fragrance obsessive. I love that the number one thing everyone has said to me is that this fragrance smells like me. My sister actually did a post yesterday and was explaining how it’s so identifiably me. That’s so special to me, that I’ve created something that truly is my signature scent.
My family knows how particular I am about scents. For example, I never bought lotions from stores. I’ve always gone to this one woman and custom made the exact scent I love. With this it was obviously hard as I’m not a perfumer – so describing which notes I wanted wasn't the easiest. I had such a great time learning though, and working with the team, using their expertise to bring the scent I wanted to life. They had suggested things such as adding a woodsy element or moss or tonka bean – which I thought I didn't want – but when it was all mixed together, I understood how important it was to balance those notes to create a scent I wanted.
One of my biggest beauty – and life – lessons has been not keeping up with every trend. I think it’s so fun to experiment and try new things but there are plenty of trends I’m too old for now. It’s fun to try new looks with make-up and hair but at the end of the day, you need to be who you are. You can always tell when someone feels confident or uncomfortable because they’re pigeonholing themselves into something that doesn’t reflect who they are.
It’s been such a blessing to be able to learn from the talented people around me. For example, Ash, my make-up artist. I asked her how to contour my nose the other day – and obviously she was really offended that after all these years in the chair I hadn't been paying attention to what she was doing! I’m getting more into learning about techniques now and it’s great that I can ask her to teach me section by section – for example, just brows. These days there are so many great places to learn about this stuff – whether it’s YouTube or Tiktok. I watch all of that too – I find it so fascinating.
I lean on my sisters for beauty advice too. Two of them have make-up and skincare brands so it’s so useful being able to learn from everything they’ve seen and done over the years. Kim introduced me to hyaluronic acid. She really raved about it and now it’s become something I always use in my skincare routine. She also told me to simplify my skincare routine. Kylie has all the make-up tips. She taught me about blotting and finding formulas that really work for my skin, which is why I usually avoid things like cream foundation now.
I’m a one trick pony when it comes to hair. I can do a bun or a blowout but putting a curl in it or anything else? I’m awful at that. My hair stylists have tried to teach me over the years but with no luck. I am good at doing a sleek slicked-back bun. You need a really good brush and a shit tonne of gel. You basically put the gel through plus a little water so that you can thin it out a little. You then slick it all back and go over it with a hairdryer so it sets in place – it literally becomes a helmet.
When it comes to skincare, hydration is so important. I have pretty oily skin, but I’ve learned what works to keep things really balanced – i.e. maintain a glow and look fresh – particularly under make-up. I love the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream.
My bag is like Mary Poppins. One thing I’ll always have on me is a hand sanitiser. Also, I’m Armenian and feel like I get pretty oily throughout the day, so always make sure to have a powder puff and pressed powder – I love the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush one for that too.
When it comes to make-up, I’ve always been a fan of bold lashes. I love a really glam look when I am getting my make-up done, and I do find that lashes can really help make heavy eyeshadow look a lot more balanced. Like I said, I’m Armenian, so I do have pretty thick natural lashes – but there's just nothing like a good false lash to tie a look together.
Nails are also my thing. I'm currently loving gold chrome manicures. Gold has been a key part of my looks recently – for make-up too. I'm also really drawn to "bubble bath" nails – I can go clean with this or add some gemstones for a bit more of a party vibe.
The advice I want to pass down to my kids is to learn to drown out the noise. It’s so important to be authentically you. It’s a superpower to be able to feel confident not doing what everyone else is doing and to not be like everyone else.
