One of the most influential books I’ve ever read is The Decisive Moment by Henri Cartier-Bresson – a true icon in the history of photography. I stumbled upon it in a stack of Prosper’s books before we were married, and it captivated me instantly. I was lost in it for over an hour. Some of the photographs, especially those from China in the 1930s and 1940s, were so powerful they sparked my imagination."

When it comes to Assouline titles, New York by New York holds a special place in my heart, though I recently finished Paris by Paris, and it’s just as exceptional. I spent years making these books because they need to say so much. It’s my responsibility to capture the essence of each era, ensuring the most significant moments are represented in the most compelling way while avoiding anything too predictable or cliché. I approach them like an extensive documentary on the history of a city, bringing the world of yesterday to life in a way that feels relevant and captivating for contemporary eyes.

When it comes to art, culture, or design, inspiration is EVERYWHERE, at ANY TIME.

Inspiration strikes in two ways. First, by discovering something new – whether it's a place, person, book or artwork that resonates with me. Second, by bringing dreams to life, which requires solitude and music – and that can happen anywhere. When it comes to art, culture, or design, inspiration is everywhere, at any time. Sometimes, a simple detail sparks an entire project or story. I spend a lot of time on Instagram, where I discover amazing artists, but I’m also fortunate to be part of a community that values culture, exchanging ideas and insights with them.

The most beautiful bookstore and library I’ve ever visited? The New York Public Library and La Bibliothèque Richelieu in Paris are both extraordinary, but the Walker Library of the Human Imagination in Connecticut is unmatched as a private library.   For bookstores, Maison Assouline in London and Riyadh, along with our first boutique in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, are top of my list. They’re not just bookstores – they’re places to truly immerse yourself.

I don’t shop often and prefer to spend my time in auction houses or vintage bookstores. In New York, I spend a lot of time at Christie’s on Saturdays before auction week – it feels like a museum, with its beautifully curated exhibitions. In Paris, I always go to Hôtel Drouot and the Marché aux Puces. Our last acquisition was a stunning bronze of a woman with an exceptional patina from Christie’s in New York.

My wardrobe is built around timeless pieces from Azzedine Alaïa, paired with jeans and shirts from brands like Loro Piana and Uniqlo. I also have a penchant for shoes, particularly from Gucci, and love both new and vintage glasses. For timeless style, it’s getting harder to find designers who prioritise simple, well-cut garments made with high-quality materials, but Giambattista Valli remains one of my favourites. A recent purchase I absolutely love is a little t-shirt from Bonpoint in Paris for my grandson, who is about to be born.

For homeware and unique design pieces, I love discovering pieces at auctions and from private designers. For classic, timeless pieces, I always go to Restoration Hardware – they’re the best for quality basics.

At the moment, my favourite beauty product is the Abeille Royale serum and cream from Guerlain, though I enjoy switching things up from time to time. As for fragrance, for over 20 years, I wore Femme de Rochas, but now my signature scent is Paris-Venise by Chanel. For the best skincare treatments, Carita on Faubourg St Honoré in Paris is a must-visit, and in New York, Maison de Beauté is my go-to. Both offer incredible treatments.

When it comes to dining, in Paris, Chez l’Ami Louis is a favourite. In New York, I love Il Buco and Le Bernardin. At L’Ami Louis, the wood-fired roast chicken is unbeatable. At Il Buco, the ribeye for four is a must. And at Le Bernardin, I always go for the salmon rillettes and the Peruvian chocolate dessert. A great restaurant is about more than just food – the service, ambience and décor are just as important.

My favourite hotels in the world are La Colombe d'Or in Saint-Paul-de-Vence and Hôtel du Couvent in Nice. For a truly special experience, I always recommend ROAR Africa – it offers the most incredible and fascinating journey through Africa. My ultimate travel essential is a pair of oversized sunglasses, especially from Gucci or vintage Balenciaga

The most unforgettable place I’ve ever stayed? AlUla in Saudi Arabia. We did a book on it, and my son, Sebastien, who accompanied the photographer and illustrator, shared so much about the experience. After seeing the photos, Prosper and I had to visit. Everything was a surprise – from the warmth of the people to the stunning infrastructure blending perfectly with the landscape, the historical tombs, and the Desert X exhibition featuring world-class artists. It was all about discovering the unexpected in the most incredible way."

My favourite city for design and culture will always be Paris. With its rich mix of grand and small museums, galleries, bookstores, cinemas, restaurants and cafés, there’s always something new to discover. Wandering from one spot to the next – exploring the streets, monuments, beautiful facades and iconic bridges – never gets old.

The opening of Maison Assouline Riyadh is incredibly exciting – it’s thrilling to be part of such a monumental project from the very beginning, and the scene is breathtaking. If you’re visiting for the first time, explore our collections and cabinet de curiosité, then head to the first floor for a stunning view from the terrace and to experience the restaurant’s unique ambience, which often hosts private dinners.

I’m also excited about upcoming Assouline titles, including Costumes of Saudi Arabia: A Heritage of Fashion, which celebrates the country’s rich fashion history, and a book on Bahrain’s pearls, coming soon. Next for Assouline is global expansion, starting with the launch of The Library Collection in May, featuring stunning library objects and scents. We’re also launching library lounges in airports, beginning with Riyadh, to create relaxing sanctuaries for travellers — more essential than ever in today’s world.
