Everything You Need To Know About Sound Baths
It’s A Modern Take On An Ancient Practice
For centuries, sound has been used to restore harmony in the body and mind. Across cultures – from temples in Ancient Egypt to Vedic chanting rituals in India – sound has been recognised not just as a spiritual practice but a therapeutic one. Today, sound baths offer a modern expression of that same philosophy. “A sound bath is a meditative, immersive experience that allows you to connect to yourself on a deeper level,” says Liv. “You simply lie down, close your eyes, and let the layers of sound move through you. These vibrations gently regulate the nervous system and shift your brain into a more relaxed state, which helps you drop into stillness without any force or effort.” For Linda, the effect is more than auditory – it’s physiological. “It’s not about listening, it’s about feeling. The sounds interact with the body on a cellular level. I’ve had clients describe it as floating, or like a deep emotional release. Each person’s experience is unique, but the sense of internal reset is universal.”
There’s A Science Behind It
Once considered esoteric, sound healing is now supported by a growing body of research. At the most basic level, sound is vibration – and everything in the body, including cells and tissues, carries its own frequency. When the body is under chronic stress, those internal rhythms become dysregulated. Sound helps bring them back into harmony. “Specific frequencies help entrain brainwaves, guiding the mind away from high-alert beta states into more meditative alpha and theta patterns,” says Liv. “This is the space where deep rest and repair happen. It’s similar to meditation, but for many people, it’s easier to access because there’s no mental effort required.” Linda notes that the effects extend beyond the mind. “Sound can stimulate the vagus nerve, reduce cortisol levels, support lymphatic drainage and promote circulation. Some frequencies are even known to enhance melatonin production or regulate the immune system. It’s not just about relaxation – it’s about activating the body’s natural healing response.”
The Tools Matter
Sound healing sessions typically blend a range of instruments, each selected for its frequency and energetic resonance. Crystal singing bowls, Tibetan bowls, gongs, chimes and drums are most commonly used, and each one plays a specific role. “The gong is incredibly powerful – I call it a cosmic hug,” says Linda. “It helps shake off anything stuck or stagnant. Crystal bowls create pure, resonant tones that bring the system back into balance. Chimes add a delicate, heart-opening layer that softens the whole experience.” Liv adds that no two sessions are ever the same. “I work intuitively, depending on the group’s energy and intention. Ocean drums and rain sticks are especially calming toward the end of a session – they help gently ground you after deeper emotional release.
You’ll Feel An Instant Shift
For many, the effects are immediate. People report sleeping better, feeling more emotionally balanced, or simply more at ease in their bodies. “So many clients tell me they sleep better than they have in months after just one session,” says Liv. “One woman even stopped clenching her jaw at night – something she hadn’t been able to shift in years.” Linda shares similar stories. “I’ve had clients cry, laugh, or walk out glowing. One woman told me her baby flipped from breech to head-down after a session. It’s never about forcing change – it’s about creating space for the body to realign itself.”
Consistency Is Best
Like most wellness tools, the benefits of sound healing are amplified with regular practice. While some people experience a profound shift after one session, deeper transformation happens over time. “I usually recommend three sessions to start, spaced a week or two apart,” says Linda. “That gives the body time to integrate.” Liv compares it to nervous system training. “It’s like going to the gym – but for your inner world. The more often you enter that calm, meditative state, the easier it becomes to access it even during stressful moments.”
You Can Try It At Home
You don’t need to attend a full session to feel the benefits. Even five minutes of listening to healing frequencies can create a sense of calm. “I always recommend starting or ending your day with a sound healing playlist,” says Liv. “There are plenty of great ones on Spotify and YouTube. A Tibetan bowl is also a great tool – just strike it with intention when you want to pause and reset.” Linda has also made her sound journeys available online. “You can find them on Apple Music and Spotify under Hybrid Soul Sounds. Even a few minutes of listening can bring you back to yourself.”
What You Should Expect
Sound baths are typically held in softly lit, comfortable spaces. Sessions last about an hour, and participants lie down on mats with cushions, blankets or eye masks. “You don’t need to prepare much – just wear cosy, layered clothes and come with an open mind,” says Liv. “Bring socks and a jumper in case your body temperature drops as you relax.” Linda also recommends avoiding heavy meals or caffeine beforehand. “And if you’d like to reflect afterwards, bring a journal. The main thing is to allow yourself to receive.”
Where To Try It
Both Liv and Linda recommend checking out sound sessions with Zarine, one of the first sound healers in the region. SEVA and Samadhi are also popular spaces for wellness experiences in Dubai. “There’s such a growing wellness scene here,” says Liv. “It’s about finding the space – and the teacher – that feels right for you.”
