How To Perfect The Art of Tablescaping

If you’re a keen host, you probably spend a decent amount of time and energy thinking not just about the food, but how you'd like to serve it. And according to content creator and tableware business owner Léa Sfeir, it’s easier than you think to make the surroundings as visually stunning as possible. With that in mind, we asked her to share what goes into creating a stylish tablescape…

The Starting Point

Tablescaping is not a one-size-fits all approach. "It depends," Léa says. "For me, it’s never the same thought process. Except for the important holiday seasons like Christmas and Ramadan, I don’t care much about the season, because we live in Dubai, where the weather is always the same. Really, it’s freedom, because you can use any style you want at any time of the year."

Léa’s creative process often begins with a single object that inspires her – be it a decorative piece, a vase, a plate, a tablecloth or even a flower of the season. Once she identifies her starting point, she adapts the entire theme. "If I really want to use a set of plates, for example, the flowers, candles, napkins, and glasses will be chosen accordingly to fit those plates."

Léa also loves to surprise guests where possible. "If my guests are Lebanese, I won’t go for a Lebanese dinner – it’s quite boring for them, isn’t it? Instead, I think about making it an Indian dinner or a Khaleeji table.”

The Colours

A self-proclaimed lover of colour, Léa believes it brings happiness to our lives. "To avoid getting it wrong, either go for a monochromatic table – one colour everywhere – or mix several pastel colours together: pink, yellow, green, orange.”  She also advises against using prints unless you are confident about mixing them, as it can be quite a delicate balance. For a safe bet, she suggests choosing seasonal flowers in co-ordinating colours and avoiding the overuse of roses.

Centrepieces That Wow

Léa's favourite centrepiece takes inspiration from her Parisian roots: a line of small and medium vases filled with handpicked flowers of varying heights. "It’s very important to play with  different heights – think long, medium, and short stems. Add candleholders all along the table and play with the colours if you feel more creative."

For an extra touch of elegance, she recommends incorporating small and medium cake stands with fruits, perhaps even mixed with flowers. "Cake stands with one sort of fruit in each are always a winner," she says, emphasising the importance of harmonious colour choices.  For a more personal touch, Léa loves adding objects that hold sentimental value – items purchased during your travels or gifts from loved ones. "This will always create conversation around the table."

Fashion and Tablescaping

For Léa, fashion and tablescaping go hand in hand. "Interiors, table dressing, hosting – it’s all linked together," she says. When hosting, she likes to match her outfit with the table setting, ensuring harmony without being overly co-ordinated. She also advises informing guests about any special themes to avoid any mismatches.
