BUILDING A BRAND
Anu: The idea for the brand came about during the lockdown. We were walking around London and noticed lots of people wearing merchandise featuring the Gulf logo. It sparked something – we thought why not create a brand that takes that motorsports aesthetic and makes it truly luxurious? At the time, there was nothing like it on the market.
Nandita: We both saw the potential to build something that merged our love of fashion and F1. Our aesthetic was always going to be rooted in classic design but with a bolder edge. We wanted to create wearable, timeless pieces that carried the spirit of motorsports in a refined and elevated way – something you can wear now and still want to wear in 50 years.
Anu: Having been in the fashion business for a while, we had a very clear idea of what we wanted to create. The Gulf’s racing heritage – with its iconic light blue and orange – was a huge inspiration from the start. Those colours became signature elements of our collections.
Nandita: We both wanted to create pieces that felt luxurious but also cool and accessible. Our jackets, in particular, blend the influence of motorsports with a sense of understated glamour. The brand has resonated because it’s wearable, not costume-y. It’s fashion, not fanwear.
Anu: F1 represents boldness to me – but also a kind of timeless cool. It’s an attitude, a way of moving through the world with purpose and style.
Nandita: And it’s about precision and confidence. There’s something very powerful about the energy of F1, and we want that to come through in what we create.
Anu: Our heritage definitely influences our sense of style. The use of colour, the appreciation for craftsmanship – it’s all been shaped by our cultural background and the beautiful diversity of cultures we were surrounded by growing up.
Nandita: And of course, our mother and grandmother had a big impact on us, too. They were always impeccably dressed – whether they were on the school run or going out for dinner. That sense of effortless style really stayed with us.
Anu: If I had to give advice to women wanting to start a brand today, I’d say: be original and find a way to stand out. Don’t follow trends. Know your vision and stay loyal to it.
Nandita: And love what you do. Passion and focus will take you a long way. Fashion is not an easy industry – it takes stamina but if you care deeply about what you’re doing, it shows.
Anu: To maintain balance, we’ve chosen to release just one collection per year. That rhythm allows us to stay creative while also making time for family. It’s a pace that works for us.
Nandita: I don’t see it as pressure because I genuinely enjoy the work. I manage two brands, and I’ve learned to prioritise and manage my time well. That balance is what keeps me going.
NETWORK & AUTHENTICITY
Anu: Protecting your energy is so important. For me, spirituality is grounding – I meditate and prioritise sleep. Those are my non-negotiables. My family also keeps me grounded – my husband and kids give everything perspective. I also find clarity in my routines, like taking long walks around London and spending time in the gym.
Nandita: I’m very conscious of the energy of the people I work with. If I don’t connect with someone’s energy, I simply can’t work with them. As well as daily prayer and movement. Whether it’s the gym or yoga, I make space for something physical every day to help me stay centred.
Anu: I’m very grateful to have a network that’s genuinely supportive. Friends and collaborators who believe in what we’re building – their encouragement has played such a meaningful role in the brand’s growth and evolution. My husband is instrumental in helping me move forward, too. His support means everything.
Nandita: I agree – it helps to have a strong network. Our father has always given us amazing advice. And Anu and I have always had each other’s backs. We support one another through everything. But at the end of the day, the product has to speak for itself. That’s always been our focus.
Anu: Princess Beatrice and Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, have been incredibly supportive by attending our pop-ups and showing such genuine interest in the brand. It’s something I really appreciate.
Nandita: I’ve been fortunate to have the support of many well-known people – their belief in me means the world and continues to inspire me.
Anu: My advice to younger women? Follow your dreams. Keep an open mind and enjoy the process – not everything needs to happen at once.
Nandita: You’ve got to give it your heart and soul. Believe in what you’re doing and success will follow. People often think fashion is all glamour, but it’s tough. I wish someone had told me that at the start. That said, I love challenges and I’m always learning.
FASHION & PERSONAL STYLE
Anu: Mornings start with the school run, then the gym and then a walk to ground myself. I use that time to practise gratitude and set my intentions.
Nandita: I don’t talk to anyone for the first hour of my day – no calls, no meetings. That quiet time sets my mood.
Anu: My style is classic, cool, and stylish. I like timeless pieces with a twist. I wear clothes and accessories that I’ve had for 25 years – pieces that hold meaning and never go out of style.
Nandita: Mine is classic, comfortable, and chic. I dress for how I want to feel. I wear a lot of black, and definitely repeat-wear pieces. I have a black bomber from YSL which is over ten years old and I still wear it a lot, and a denim jacket from Iceberg which I bought when I was in college. It’s about how you wear something, not how new it is.
Anu: I wear a lot of Frame and Agolde denim – that’s my go-to. When I want to feel powerful, I put on a great suit. I like the ones by Victoria Beckham as they’re structured, bold and feminine at the same time. Chanel jackets are great for elevating jeans. And I love Miu Miu’s fun, sporty jackets too.
Nandita: I love wearing jeans – from Mother and Agolde – and a blazer. This is a look I’ve been obsessed with since I was 16. I’m also not afraid to wear track pants – even when I probably shouldn’t. If I’m dialling things up, a suit or a chic midi dress by Joseph or Ralph Lauren is timeless.
Anu: Every woman should invest in a great leather jacket and the perfect pair of jeans.
Nandita: An AN-Y1 leather jacket is an essential too!
Anu: In fashion, I’m following JW Anderson closely and am excited to see what he does at Dior.
Nandita: I’m really inspired by the wellness and longevity space right now. In terms of fashion, inspiration comes daily. It’s always evolving.
Anu: My biggest dream? To take a sabbatical with my family, travel the world and soak up inspiration through people, fashion, art and music – and to see AN-Y1 become a truly global brand. I’m also currently working on a children’s book that launches in London this September and philanthropy is also one of our shared passions.
Nandita: Mine would definitely be to combine the brand with philanthropy. I’d love for it to grow into something that gives back while inspiring others.
