Meet The Designer: Sharifa Alhashemi
Fashion has always been woven into the fabric of my life. Growing up around my family’s long-standing ties to the fashion and perfumery world, I was constantly inspired. While I went on to study and build a career in finance, IT and cybersecurity – earning both a bachelor’s and a master’s in the US – I knew I’d circle back to my first love.
I’m an Emirati raised in Saudi Arabia, with childhood summers spent in fashion capitals like Los Angeles, New York and Paris. Those early travels sparked a lasting love for high fashion and shaped my instinct for detail, texture and style. At the same time, my roots have always grounded me. ONORI isn’t a traditional Emirati brand, but my heritage runs through every collection. Pearls, for instance, feature in almost every piece – a quiet tribute to the UAE’s rich pearl-diving history and a signature that speaks to where I come from.
I take inspiration from the elegance of vintage style for my designs – whether through old films, iconic fashion moments or the pages of classic magazines. I’m also endlessly inspired by some of my favourite places in Italy – Milan, Rome, Lake Como, Capri – all of which have shaped the brand’s aesthetic. I wanted ONORI to embody that effortless blend of classic sophistication and modern design: timeless, elegant and graceful. We intuitively draw from the past but always make sure the pieces feel fresh, contemporary and connected to what’s happening in fashion today. It’s a seamless merge that ensures our collections feel both nostalgic and forward-thinking.
ONORI, comes from the phrase “With Honour” and is a tribute to my late sister, whose strength and resilience continue to guide me. She taught me that no matter the challenges we face, we must always move forward – with honour, with love, and with purpose.
Every ONORI piece holds a special memory for me. Each one is unique and thoughtfully crafted, which makes it difficult to choose a favourite. It’s easier to reflect by collection, as each carries its own stories, challenges and milestones – each shaped by a dedicated team working tirelessly day and night to bring it to life. I’d say the SS25 “Love in Dots” collection stands out for me the most. My sister and I spent countless late nights at the office working on it – some nights even sleeping there. I’ll never forget when our mother joined us one evening and stayed with us until 3am offering her support and presence.
One of my all-time favourite designs has to be The Grace Dress. This piece took an entire year to finalise. From the initial idea to the approved sample, I went through countless variations—feathers, colours, crystals, zippers, fabric trials and collar designs. Then, The Serena Dress took over six months to perfect. And, the Dolly Jumpsuit, a glamorous and effortlessly chic piece.
Right now, my fashion wish list is all about timeless icons and standout pieces, like the Bulgari Serpenti Viper bracelet, the Chanel Maxi Flap bag and the Chanel tweed dress and collar shirt from their SS25 collection. Some of my favourite accessories to pair with ONORI pieces are Chanel classic bags, denim or tweed. Cartier love bracelets and Tiffany & Co. charm bracelets. When it comes to online shopping, I also love to get pieces from Revolve, Carbon38.
Over the next five years, I believe the region will establish itself as a true fashion powerhouse. With the rise of local designers and an increase in global collaborations, the region is well on its way to becoming a major force in the global fashion industry. Leading fashion houses are already recognising this shift – Zegna, for instance, chose Dubai to debut its Summer 2026 collection. Dubai is no longer just a luxury shopping destination, it’s becoming a key player in hosting world-class fashion events.
In Dubai, to eat and relax, you can usually find me at the Arts Club, or Samadhi Wellness. I always stop by my favourite matcha place too whenever I have the time, usually Toby’s Estate, Backyard or The Grey.
One of my proudest achievements has been launching ONORI and taking it to Paris Fashion Week – a major milestone that marked a turning point for the brand. Seeing ONORI featured on Ounass was another unforgettable moment. Within just one year, I’ve also built my own atelier – a space that reflects the heart and soul of everything I create.
Looking ahead, I envision ONORI being stocked in leading department stores and worn by women around the world. I want it to be recognised for its understated elegance, exceptional craftsmanship and timeless designs that empower those who wear them. But my vision goes beyond growing the brand – I’m equally passionate about giving back to the fashion community, nurturing emerging talent, and fostering a spirit of creativity and collaboration.
My advice for young designers or entrepreneurs would be to stay true to who you are and make sure your designs reflect your personality. Get inspired, but always leave your mark. Be ready to commit fully and stay resilient – that’s the key to success in anything, not just fashion. And never forget, quality matters most – choose the right fabric for the right design and never cut corners.
