Brushing Your Hair Incorrectly

“Hair should be brushed when it’s fully dry. If you need to brush it while wet, make sure it’s coated with conditioner or a hair mask during the shower, or spray it with a leave-in conditioner after getting out. You should never brush your hair from the top to bottom. Instead, start from the ends of your hair, moving up towards the roots. When brushing, hold the brush underneath the hair to avoid breakage. My top tip would be to use a brush with widely spaced bristles to prevent tangles and breakage.” – Rami Jabali, hair stylist

02

Washing Your Hair Every Day

"Over-washing can strip away the natural oils that are essential for maintaining a healthy scalp and hair. This, combined with regular use of heat tools, can dry it out, damaging its elasticity and making it more prone to breakage and split ends. To avoid this, try scheduling your wash days. When your hair starts to look greasy, consider putting it in an up-do to extend the time between washes, or use a bit of dry shampoo for a quick refresh." – Sebastian Iskander, hair stylist

03

Avoiding Regular Hair Trims

“Many people make the mistake of avoiding regular haircuts to try and grow their hair. However, this causes the build up of split ends, which can migrate the hair shaft and cause more damage. Trim your hair every three months to maintain healthy strands and prevent severe breakage” – Cybelle Beddewe, hair stylist

04

Over-Using Chemical Treatments

“If you are constantly doing chemical treatments like colouring, perming or even bleaching your hair, it can drastically impact the quality and integrity of it. It can even alter your hair’s structure. If you must undergo these processes, space them out and follow up with deep conditioning treatments that help to minimise harm.” – Cybelle

05

Putting Wet Hair Into A Tight Bun

“Tying your hair up too often, especially when it's wet or using tight rubber bands, can cause significant damage. Wet hair is more fragile, and pulling it back into a tight bun can lead to breakage and weaken the strands over time. The friction can also cause split ends and fraying. To minimise damage, let your hair dry before styling and use soft, fabric-covered bands or looser styles.” – Sebastian

06

Using Hot Water to Wash Hair

“Hot water may seem soothing, and here in the Middle East, where our climate often results in naturally warmer water, it's common to use higher temperatures when washing. However, hot water can strip your hair of its natural oils, leaving it dry and brittle. Instead, try rinsing with lukewarm or cool water to retain moisture and keep your hair feeling healthy and hydrated.” – Cybelle

07

Forgetting To Use Heat Protection

“Living in a hot climate like we do here in the Middle East means our hair is exposed to the sun's harsh rays. Forgetting to use heat protection not only leaves your hair vulnerable to damage from hot tools but also from the sun. Prolonged sun exposure can dry out your hair, cause split ends, and even bleach your strands over time. To keep your hair healthy, make sure to apply a heat protectant before using styling tools, and consider using products with UV protection to shield your hair from the sun." – Sebastian
