A Stylish Boutique Owner Shares Her Fashion Favourites

Shahili Gomes McCoy is the co-founder of The Design Collective (TDC), a unique multi-brand fashion concept store in Sri Lanka. Since its launch seven years ago, TDC has become a vibrant platform spotlighting emerging designers from across South Asia. Here, Shahili talks about the brands she can’t get enough of – from Sri Lanka’s best sustainable labels to India’s iconic jewelry houses – and what it means to celebrate South Asian creativity through fashion.

Where possible, The Design Collective promotes sustainable and women-led brands, and since opening the store, the scope has widened and we now stock around 70 designers from the wider region. I’ve always been interested in fashion but I chose to study business rather than design, which perhaps explains why I co-founded a store rather than started a clothing brand myself.

I recently moved to Abu Dhabi after living in London for more than 15 years. I live there with my husband David and our son River, and I’m very excited about my new collaboration with Region, which is the UAE’s coolest concept space in Abu Dhabi. The Frankie Shop recently hosted a pop-up there and I’ll be working with Region to showcase the best South Asian designers.

One thing that excites me most about the South Asian fashion scene is its incredible diversity and depth – the way designers are reinterpreting heritage textiles, crafts, and techniques through a contemporary lens. In Sri Lanka, I see designers using old techniques like batik and beeralu in new ways to bring them to a new audience. There is a powerful cultural narrative being told through South Asian fashion right now, and I love being part of a movement that champions creativity.

One thing that excites me most about the South Asian fashion scene is its incredible DIVERSITY AND DEPTH.

Currently, my top three under-the-radar South Asian brands include Hala, which creates modern silhouettes using handwoven Sri Lankan textiles. I love how it celebrates local craftsmanship in such a fresh, wearable way. House of Lonali is the second. Its commitment to sustainable production using deadstock material is so thoughtful but the pieces still feel chic. Finally, Yam is all about bold new prints hand-painted by Priya, the founder. I love the colours – and the co-ords and sets are particularly good.

My favourite bag brand is Misela. The pieces are elegant yet distinctive and there’s always a sense of timelessness to the bags. It’s the kind of brand that speaks to women who appreciate quiet luxury and thoughtful craftsmanship. I also love how they can personalise the bags and purses.

I’m constantly inspired by South Asian jewellery designers, and three of my absolute favourites are Valliyan, Misho, and Dhora. Valliyan’s bold, vintage-inspired pieces always make a statement – they’re glamorous with a nostalgic edge. Misho is all about that sculptural minimalism that’s so refined and architectural and Dhora blends tradition with a raw, contemporary spirit. Every piece feels rooted yet refreshingly modern.

For evening wear, especially wedding season, I love Dimuthu Sahabandu. The pieces are glamorous, intricate and effortlessly elegant, with just the right amount of sparkle and drama. They manage to blend modern silhouettes with traditional detailing, making them perfect for a high impact look. For a more minimalist approach, Galvan is my go-to. It’s sophisticated, elegant and the luxurious fabrics make for the perfect evening look.

I have a few footwear favourites that I always turn to. I live in my Prada rubber Monolith sandals in black and cream but for something more laidback, I love Birkenstock. Lastly, Aquazzura always does a great statement heel.

For resort and swimwear, I love  Oseree. Its pieces combine modern designs with unique fabrics, creating the perfect balance of glamour and functionality. I love how it elevates swimwear with metallic finishes and stunning cuts – perfect for making a statement at any beach or poolside. Solid & Striped is also another favourite; the designs are really playful and the swimsuits are always flattering.

My favourite sustainable brands are Doodlage and House of LonaliDoodlage has such innovative designs, combining upcycled materials and eco-friendly processes to craft unique, stylish pieces that have a limited environmental footprint. House of Lonali also focuses on slow fashion, offering timeless pieces that are beautifully made and sustainably sourced.

Area NYC is my go-to for denim. Its designs are always cutting-edge and incorporate unique details that make them different from other denim brands.

Gandhara is hands down my favourite home décor brand. It mixes traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, making every piece feel like a work of art. But I am also totally biased as it's my interiors store.

Two brands that highlight South Asian artisanal techniques include Raw Mango – the commitment to preserving age-old weaving techniques like the traditional ‘ikat’ and ‘banarasi’ craftsmanship is something I truly admire – and batik brand Sonali Dharmwardena. It creates such unique, vibrant pieces that really celebrate the tradition of batik with a contemporary twist.

There is a POWERFUL CULTURAL NARRATIVE being told through South Asian fashion right now, and I love being part of a movement that CHAMPIONS CREATIVITY.

For loungewear and sleepwear, it has to be  Eberjey. The pieces are incredibly soft, comfortable and stylish. The sets are perfect for a quiet weekend at home or when I just need something comfortable that doesn’t compromise on style.

Try Gentle Monster for glasses. Its designs are bold, innovative and truly make a statement. I recently came back from a trip to Seoul and I’m obsessed with the design of their stores.

Quite a lot of my own style is reflected in the collections at The Design Collective. As a co-founder and curator, I have my own influence but at the same time, it is a collaborative space aimed at encouraging creative people to share ideas and learn from each other. My style is certainly not the only one represented.
