Meet The Interior Designer: Manar M. Alali
My passion for interior design is intrinsic. It wasn’t something I studied or was specifically taught, it was just a natural part of who I am. I think my mother was a big influence. Every year during Ramadan, she would refresh our home by renovating or rearranging elements like the chairs or the sofa. It was then that I developed a deep appreciation for how regular updates can keep a space looking beautiful and vibrant. This constant cycle of transformation showed me that change is essential for maintaining a fresh environment.
I find inspiration in the ever-changing world around me. Whether it’s imaginative displays in retail shops, the textures and patterns of clothing or the breathtaking beauty of nature – each offers endless creative possibilities and the potential to spark my creativity. Even seemingly mundane or random images that I encounter on the street can serve as unexpected sources of inspiration.
My design style is best described as modern and minimalist – plus, there’s a commitment to clean lines and a refined simplicity in my work. It’s a streamlined aesthetic, where every design element is chosen to contribute to an overarching sense of elegance.
Wood and linens feature heavily in my designs. Wood, with its rich textures and natural beauty, adds a sense of warmth and timelessness to any space, while linen offers a gentle, luxurious touch. Combined, these materials create a beautiful interplay of textures and tones, enhancing the overall atmosphere of a room.
My go-to colour palette is predominantly ‘sandy’. I am drawn to these tones because they evoke a sense of calm and tranquillity, creating a soothing and welcoming environment. It encompasses a spectrum of colours – from warm beiges to soft taupes, all of which offer a versatile and timeless backdrop.
Incorporating one-of-a-kind elements is the way to create a personal and memorable space. Each unique piece in my schemes is thoughtfully selected – it has to offer both character and individuality to set the overall result apart.
One of the finest pieces I ever purchased came from Ebarza – the Diamond Stainless Steel Side Table. Not only is the quality and craftsmanship exceptional, but it works in so many design contexts. The attention to detail offered by Ebarza makes this piece a standout addition to any space.
One country I love visiting is Italy. Its unparalleled cultural richness and artistic legacy are a real source of creative stimulation. The blend of historical magnificence with contemporary design across the country’s diverse regions offers a continuous spring of ideas. From the grandeur of ancient Roman architecture and the elegance of Renaissance art to the innovative trends in modern Italian design, the aesthetic diversity always influences my work.
While I don’t identify as a collector, I love plates and serving dishes. I enjoy exploring the intricate designs, craftsmanship and artistry. I find great joy in discovering the various styles and unique characteristics – from elegant, timeless patterns to contemporary and innovative designs.
At the moment, there are two specific items on my wish list. First, I’m interested in using sintered stone to cover my own floors at home. I’m particularly drawn to its sophisticated appearance and durability. The natural beauty and unique characteristics of sintered stone align so well with my refined and timeless approach. Secondly, I want a chandelier to serve as a focal point in my home. I have yet to find the perfect piece – I want something that not only illuminates the space but also adds an element of grandeur and individuality.
