Watch & fine jewellery industry expert, Pritam Mukhi shares his buying dos & don'ts...

Do invest in the right brand. I'd suggest Omega, Tudor, Breitling, Tag Heuer, Bell & Ross or Cartier. Most of these brands retain their value fairly well, especially if you look after them well and don't lose the original boxes and papers. Models like the Omega Seamaster, Tudor Black Bay series, Tag Heuer Aquaracer and Cartier Tank are all worth looking at. It's also worth looking for interesting movements and mechanics.

Don't discount the vintage market. Should you be open to buying a pre-loved watch, I'd recommend a Rolex Datejust from the 70s or 90s. These are available at great prices and if they're in good condition, can work forever. If you are looking at the resale market, always purchase from a reputable dealer. You need to know you're buying from someone who knows how to open the watch up and verify all the parts are original and really provide a professional insight into its overall condition. Also, make sure the watch is accompanied by its original certificates – they matter for resale purposes; no papers means you'll take a considerable hit on investment if you decide to sell it down the line.

Do buy something you know you'll wear. I believe the best return on investment is in how much joy you get from owning and wearing the watch. Almost every collector I know still owns the first watch they purchased, no matter how little they paid for it.

Don't forget to take care of your timepieces. Clean your watch after you've worn it with a soft cloth (like the one for your sunglasses) and never tissue paper as the lindt is abrasive. Service it yearly with the manufacturer and be aware of information like whether it's water resistant. Keep the original box, make sure you store it away from magnets and avoid extended exposure to sunlight when you're not wearing it.
