My love for hair started at 11 when I was blow-drying and styling for my aunt and neighbour with my mum’s hairdryer. As a teenager, I worked in a local salon in Kilkenny during school holidays. Though I dreamt of joining the police, I was too young and soon realised the salon was where I belonged. I trained in Dublin before moving to London, where I joined a 25-strong team. Within six months, I was assistant manager and became manager after just a year.

The bob was the first style I truly mastered. Timeless, versatile and flattering for so many, it remains a favourite of mine. Creating one during a trade test taught me how deceptively simple it seems – precision is everything, but when it’s done right, the result is stunning.

London ignited my passion for colour. Working at Alan International, I immediately enrolled in colour courses, where I found my calling. While I’d enjoyed cutting and styling, colour became my true love. Industry icons like Patrick Cameron, Jo Hansford, Lisa Shepherd and Beverly Cobella showed me how transformative hairdressing could be.

Styling HRH Sheikh Mohammed’s daughters was a big moment. They were so gracious and made me feel completely at ease despite the pressure I felt at the time. Winning the Lifetime Achievement Award at BeautyWorld Middle East was also one of the proudest moments of my career. It felt like recognition of all my work over the past 20 years to build an inclusive hair community in the Middle East.

Some client moments are truly unforgettable. One husband booked an appointment for his wife, explaining she never made time for herself. He paid in full and told us to contact him directly for any extras. She was so touched and became a regular client.

Covid was the toughest challenge of my career. Closing the salon and facing uncertainty was incredibly hard. I stayed busy creating Instagram content and connecting with clients, but reopening with restrictions was another hurdle. Thankfully, we made it through.

My advice for aspiring hairdressers is simple: love what you do. Passion is everything. Seek a mentor who inspires you, even if it means travelling to learn from them. Hairdressing isn’t just about technique – it’s about making people feel amazing.

I encourage clients to STEP BACK, invest in TREATMENTS, use HEAT PROTECTANTS and nourish their hair FROM WITHIN.

The industry has become more accessible than ever. Social media and platforms like YouTube now share expert tips with everyone, whether styling a fringe or choosing the right products. The launch of GHD irons was another game-changer. Although I was initially sceptical, I was completely converted after trying them – they became a must-have for any serious hairdresser.

For 2025, Mocha mousse is a standout trend. Its rich, chocolatey tones have been a favourite at the salon for years, especially for darker hair in the Middle East. I created my version of the shade, inspired by a Patricia Mullins sculpture I own – the way the light hit it sparked the idea, translating beautifully into hair colour. While I love bold creativity, I’m relieved pastel hues like blue and green are fading – they’re stunning but notoriously high-maintenance. For me, true creativity lies in seeing beauty in the everyday, whether it’s fashion, art or even the way light plays on a surface.

My approach to hair is all about natural, effortless styles. I love soft cuts with movement, flattering colours and easy-to-recreate looks. High-quality products and personalised consultations are central to making hair care accessible for everyone.

Healthy hair starts with doing less. Over-colouring and excessive heat styling wreak havoc. I encourage clients to step back, invest in treatments, use heat protectants and nourish their hair from within. My go-to product? Kérastase Elixir Ultime – it works as a heat protectant, finishing oil, and even an overnight treatment. My routine is all about maintenance. I use a detox clay masque weekly to keep my hair healthy without weighing it down, and I love Olaplex No. 10 Curl Gel for my curls. I also use a UV protectant when I’m out and about. With curly hair, it’s all about finding a routine that works and sticking to it.

Looking ahead, I’m excited to expand my brand. I’m working on a line of styling products that reflect my ethos and want to continue building a strong team to ensure mariadowling Salon remains at the forefront of the industry.
