Margot Robbie & Bella Hadid’s Hair Colourist Shares His Expert Tips
Great Hair Colour Takes Time
It took me 24 hours to take Bella’s hair from dark brown to the supermodel blonde she debuted at the Cannes Film Festival (one 14-hour sitting, another 10-hour one). Your colourist should be able to estimate the time needed for a complete transformation, but make sure you ask if not – and be prepared to be sat in the chair for a long time.
Be Cautious About Using Box Dyes At Home
In the salon, your colour is customised to you, with at least three or four colours blended to deliver the most natural results (I used six to create Daisy Edgar-Jones’s brunette, for example). At home, things can go wrong quite easily and it can be hard even for professionals to undo it because of the strong ingredients and hard-to-remove dyes. If you have to – due to time or financial constraints – try a gloss or non-permanent option.
Heat Protection Is So Important
You have to protect your hair to maintain the health, vibrancy, and strength of your strands. When you use styling tools like straighteners, curling irons or hair dryers, it can cause damage to the hair cuticle and break down the internal bonds that keep it strong – especially if your hair is already compromised from colouring. Coloured hair is more porous and prone to dryness, so it’s more susceptible to heat damage. A good heat protectant acts as a barrier, helping to reduce moisture loss and minimise breakage. It also helps preserve your colour, keeps your hair looking shiny and prevents split ends.
It’s A Good Idea To Come To Appointments With References
Bella’s blond I would describe as golden, with ash around the face, but you might describe it another way. Espresso or milk chocolate can mean different things to different people. Come to your appointment with LOTS of photos, and don’t be afraid to ask your colourist for honest advice on what might suit you.
There Is A Way To Recreate Margot Robbie’s ‘Barbie’ Blond
Ask your colourist for a golden blonde with a lot of depth and sun-kissed highlights. It suits anyone with a level 5 or lighter hair colour. (As stylists we use a colour scale of 1-10, with 1 being the darkest (black) and 10 being very light blonde). Ask for a demi-permanent colour at the roots afterwards – the contrast helps with vibrancy. Between appointments, it’s good to use a chelating (detoxing) treatment like Olaplex No. 4C Bond Maintenance Deep Clean Clarifying Shampoo.
Haircare Products Should Be Treated Like Skincare
If the colour is the make-up, the haircare products you use will keep it looking good and healthy (just like make-up will look better on hydrated, happy skin). Olaplex products are designed to protect and strengthen coloured hair, repairing crucial bonds that bleach can eat away at, and keep it healthy, so I always use those during the colour process and recommend them for use afterwards. The new Rich Hydration Mask is one of my new favourites for intense repair. Consider what you’re using when styling your hair too – I love the Dyson hair dryer and Velcro rollers (which add volume and bounce without extra heat).
