A Pro Make-Up Artist’s Guide To Blush

Blush has long been a make-up staple, from the early days of rouge to today’s beauty routines. It lifts, sculpts and adds instant freshness, and in recent years has even overtaken bronzer and contour as the go-to for shaping the face. Here, Dubai-based make-up artist Sarah Sequeira shares her expert guide to choosing the right formula, applying it perfectly and finding your ideal shade…

01

Choose The Right Formula

Formulation is key when it comes to blush. Cream and liquid formulas create a natural, seamless flush – they melt into the skin, blend effortlessly and give a soft finish. Matte or dewy textures can be chosen depending on your skin type and desired look. For more intensity and staying power, powder blush is ideal: a blurring matte powder gives a sculpted finish that lasts all day. Personally, I love layering liquid and powder for the smoothest, boldest, longest-lasting result.

02

Place Your Blush With Intention

Placement makes all the difference. I always consider two things: your face’s natural shape and the effect you want. For lifted, fresh-looking cheeks, start at the apples and blend upwards towards the temples. For fuller cheeks, sweep any leftover product slightly under the eyes. Tools matter too: use a fluffy brush for powders, and fingers or a sponge for creams and liquids. One of my favourite tricks: add a tiny touch across the nose, the centre of the chin and just above the brows to tie the look together.

03

Find The Best Shade

A simple way to pick the right blush is to mimic your natural flush – think post-workout cheeks or a gentle pinch. Your lip colour is another guide: if it’s naturally pink, mauve or peach, choose a matching tone for harmony. Alternatively, match blush to your overall make-up or your mood.

04

Use Blush Beyond The Cheeks

Blush doesn’t have to stop at the cheeks. I love sweeping it across the eyes for soft definition and on the lips for a subtle pop of colour. Dewy or glowy formulas can double as a highlight, creating a monochromatic, balanced look. Stick blushes and matte powders are my go-tos for easy blending.

05

Create A Gradient Flush

Blending lighter shades with deeper ones gives cheeks dimension and a seamless, long-lasting finish. Blush palettes and duos are perfect for this. For extra polish, dust a coloured setting powder under the eyes to integrate the gradient into the rest of your face.
