Beneath a vaulted bamboo ceiling, a plush bed, lounge area and log burner make it easy to settle in, while floor-to-ceiling windows draw the landscape inside. The open-plan bathroom has a freestanding tub overlooking the forest and an outdoor rain shower, best enjoyed with the canopy’s chorus for company. Plush robes and cloud-soft pillows add to the comfort; Ugandan coffee and freshly baked cookies make for a particularly good wake-up call. The architecture feels just as connected to its setting. Pablo Luna Studio and Studio Akēka drew on the forest, local wildlife and the undulating contours of the hills, using bamboo and other natural materials to create the buildings’ fluid forms. One central lodge serves as a base camp, where groups can gather for meals and share stories around campfires. Guided walks offer another way to explore, with waterfalls and wildlife along the trails. Bwindi is also home to elusive forest elephants, though sightings aren’t guaranteed. The trek is a physical, occasionally muddy walk through the forest, followed by a closely regulated hour with the gorillas. It can take between two and seven hours to find them, so comfortable boots and light layers are key. A permit is required and it's more than permission to enter the forest. Tourism supports work for guides, porters and lodge teams, while Uganda Wildlife Authority shares 20% of its annual park revenue with communities around national parks and wildlife reserves. At Bwindi, it also allocates US$10 from each gorilla permit to local communities. Erebero Hills can arrange permits and guides, and its boot room has trekking essentials you can borrow, including shoes, gaiters, waterproof backpacks and ponchos. The lodge also packs lunch for the trail. Local porters can be hired to carry your daypack for a small fee, while guides and rangers will accept, and expect, US dollars as a tip. ## THE KIT For downtime, linen layers are best. The temperature drops at night so you won’t regret packing a jumper or fleece. For the main event, lightweight waterproofs and long sleeves are essential, as are gardening gloves to protect your hands from nettles and undergrowth.
